The Westmorland and Furness Council programme for 20mph schemes (phase 2) approved Levens inclusion after consultation in 2025 and by their Locality Boards in January 2026.
The Council has now appointed Metcalfe Plant Hire Limited to undertake the works, and implementation of the approved 20mph schemes across Eden and South Lakeland is due to begin shortly.
Following preparatory activities, the contractor will undertake sign installation and replacement broadly in line with timescales to be December 2026 or January 2027 in Levens Village area.
The contractor will generally progress from one location to the next. The time spent in each area will vary depending on the number of signs to be installed or replaced and any operational constraints encountered during delivery. The dates are indicative and may need to change due to factors such as emergency works, adverse weather, traffic management requirements, delays to preceding activities and resource availability.

The Map above shows the 6 entry and exit points from the 20mph area covering nearly all of Levens Community.
This scheme aims to promote road safety, reduce traffic noise, and support walking and cycling.
Background
Levens Residents first filled in a Poll/Survey together with taking up a petition back in 2023 to improve road and pedestrian safety throughout our village community with limited number of pavements and so take up the idea of a 20mph speed limit throughout the village.
Levens Parish Council joined in the initiative to help with the public consultation for phase 2 of Westmorland and Furness programme of communities being considered for the 20mph scheme.
Funding has been provisionally secured to reduce speed limits in parts of the village to 20mph subject to the community support that was clearly given and Council prioritisation.
