Rat sightings in Levens - please be aware

From Levens Parish Council

We have received reports from various locations in our village concerning sighting and evidence of rats. This is obviously a worrying situation.

Property owners have a legal obligation under the Prevention of Damage by Pests Act 1949 to keep premises rat and mice free. There is no vermin control at SLDC anymore so you have to obtain the services of a private contractor. If rats pose a threat to health or property you must report infestations to SLDC.

We can all take steps to prevent the spread of this nuisance by adopting some simple actions:-

• Only feed birds from enclosed hangers and do not leave any feed on the ground.

• Ensure pet food is carefully stored and gardens are kept clear of animal products and other refuse.

• Cover any open drains or pipes.

• Make sure compost bins have a hard standing, e.g. a flag stone.

• Large and overgrown foliage is severely cut back, cleared and removed.

• Do not leave windfall fruit or hen's eggs on the ground.

An advice leaflet is available on the BPCA website

We all need to be mindful, careful and ACT on this problem. Please pass on sightings to the Parish Council so that we have a clearer overview of the village in order to monitor the overall situation.
