Levens Parish sits between the shores of Morecambe Bay and the Lake District and holds some delightful landscapes and wildlife within easy reach of the village. The Village Plan recognised this and, for an action, sought to have a Parish Landscape Map. The result is that a small group of volunteers have started to see how best to implement this action but have found so many items of interest that a single map cannot do justice to them.
The Group is therefore looking at the nature of the Parish landscape and how it might be enhanced to contribute to the quality of life for the community. Whilst we have already recommended some ways in which the impact of the A590 might be reduced on the parish, have produced a brief summary of the landscape character of the area, and have worked with Cumbria County Council to review their landscape characterisation, our work is mostly about how we might look at the elements that make up the setting of the village. Amongst our work underway is a possible survey of field boundaries, a look at elements which impact on the landscape of the parish, and a survey of the historical and cultural attributes of the parish. We hope to be able to make progress on these throughout the winter and then hold an open meeting for the community to gauge reactions and contributions for our future work. Already issues such as the management of parish land and of roadside verges has been brought to our attention for future work.
