Levens Reading Group was set up just under two years ago so we are relatively new.
We meet on the third Tuesday of each month - 7.30pm to 9.30pm.
We have limited the number of our membership to twelve maximum
We aim to read a book each month, and then to meet up at each others houses to discuss what we have read. In choosing our books, all types of literary works are considered and all members contribute by making a recommendation.
Our discussion guidelines are flexible and simple - the main aim being to remain focused on the book. We don’t have a formal leader and discussions are self-generating. However, we now have a tradition that the host, or person who nominated the book of the month, gives a short introduction to the discussion by telling a bit about the author and any other particular points of interest.
We are now on to our fourth book of the year - Tulip Fever by Deborah Moggach and after this we move on to A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving.
Febraury's book Sebastian Faulk's Human Traces had a very mixed reaction from our members. Some really enjoyed the book and felt it was exceptionally good and moving. Others were less enthusiastic, finding it a difficult read and somewhat 'turgid'. Consequently this led to a very interesting discussion.
Similarly with March's book 'On Bullfighting' by A L Kennedy.
