LEGS LEVENS & THE LIMESTONE COWBOYS

APPALACHIAN DANCE TEAM

Contact: Chris Riley      Tel: 015395 60534

The team performs traditional music and dance from the Appalachian mountains of America, sometimes referred to as American Old Time music and dance.

We perform at local venues and festivals around Cumbria, Yorkshire and Lancashire.

If you are interested in joining the team we are happy to teach you to dance – you just need energy and enthusiasm.

Dance musicians, playing acoustic, stringed instruments, are also very welcome.

We practise in Levens Institute every 1st, 3rd and 5th Wednesday of each month, from 8 – 10 pm.

FANCY DANCING WITH THE TEAM?

If you think you'd like to give us a go, then just come along one Wednesday either to join in or to watch us practice without any obligation to take it any further. (We rarely miss a practice night but it's probably best to ring Chris on 015395 60534 first to confirm the practice is on).

Should you decide you'd like to dance with us we'll teach you how from the very beginning steps to whole routines. We're happy to go at your pace and you will gradually build up skill and stamina but ultimately Appalachian dancing is fairly energetic so you will need to have a basic level of fitness and good knees!

We operate as a team so there's no charge for anything we teach you - all you'll need to do is be willing to perform with the team at our bookings (when you're ready) and to pay a subscription (currently £1.50) each week you attend, to cover team costs.

In return you'll have the chance play or dance to exhilarating traditional music, have great fun doing it, make friends, get fit if you're a dancer, attend music festivals and other bookings and get as involved as you like with the whole world of American Old Time music and dance.

FANCY PLAYING FOR THE TEAM?

If you're interested in playing in our band, please feel free to come along one Wednesday to listen to us without any obligation to take it any further. (We rarely miss a practice night but it's probably best to ring Chris on 015395 60534 first to confirm the practice is on).

You'll need to be competent at an accoustic stringed instrument  but we'll help you become familiar with both the tunes the team perform to and other Old-time music, if you're interested in playing more.

Once you're familiar with our performance tunes we'd love you to join the band  and perform at bookings with us - all you need to do is be willing  to pay our subscription (currently £1.50) each week you attend, to cover team costs.

As a musician with the team you'll have the chance to play exhilarating traditional music for our dance team, have great fun doing it, make friends, attend music festivals and other bookings and get as involved as you like with the whole world of American Old Time music and dance.

WE'RE ON YOUTUBE!

If you'd like to see what Appalachian dance and music are and just what we get up to in the Institute on a Wednesday evening then have a look at Youtube.

You'll find several video clips of Legs Levens peforming at Sewerby Hall in Bridlington over the May Day Bank Holiday weekend. We were invited to play and dance at the annual American Old-time weekend and the videos show us dancing and playing in the orangery, in front of a public audience, several of whom came to see us on both the Saturday and Sunday!

We hope you enjoy our performance as much as we did - and if you're tempted to have a go don't forget that we're always happy to see new people!

DID YOU SEE US AT SEDBERGH FOLK FESTIVAL - 26TH JUNE?

Legs Levens have been invited to perform at the Sedbergh Folk Festival each year since the festival first started as the Dent Folk Festival. This year, as previously, we held a dance workshop to give people the chance to have fun giving Appalachian dancing a go. As usual we had about 20 people, from aged 5yrs upwards. Everyone managed to get the hang of the dancing and, if the ‘whooping’ was anything to go by, have a good time in the process!

Later that day the team gave a 20 minute performance which went down really well, judging by the number of people who came up to us later to compliment both the dancing and music. From our perspective, the thrill and excitement of performing to a live and appreciative audience is a fantastic reward for a little bit of nerves and lots of hard practice.
